JOHL: A Tasty Journey Through Coastal Indian Flavors.

JOHL, I’ve been itching to check out their famous menu for ages, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It caused quite a stir when it first opened, and the buzz around this place hasn’t died down one bit!

JOHL brings a fresh perspective to Coastal Indian cuisine from Konkan, Malabar on the West Coast as well as Chettinad, Pondicherry and Bay of Bengal on the East Coast of India, thanks to Chef Hari Nayak’s innovative creations. From the moment you step in, you’re greeted with a vibrant atmosphere that sets the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. We opted for the tasting menus because that’s the best way to experience the entire range of flavors and concepts they have to offer. Plus, the manager surprised us with a few off-menu dishes to sample, adding an extra layer of excitement to our meal. Let me walk you through each mouthwatering dish we savored!

We started off with a plate of amuse-bouche bites that were, simply put, so good.

The Prelude!

The first course featured an incredibly delicious fish dish, with Hamachi cured in dill and kokum, accompanied by passion fruit and Kanthari chili.

During this time, they brought out their signature bread, Masala Muska Bun. If I didn’t have a stream of courses coming, I would have happily devoured the entire loaf. Fresh from the oven and served with exceptionally delicious butter, it’s hard to beat this combination.

You can’t go wrong with another winning duo: fried chicken and bubbles, Raventós Blanc de Blancs to be exact. We dove into the delightful Berhampur Fried Chicken Wings, accompanied by apple fennel slaw and spicy potato—because who can resist a little crunch and fizz in their life?

This small dish packed a punch with big flavors! Let me present the Mini Appam with Ghee Roast Min Buri Mutton and Gong.

Let’s delve into the intricacies of Patrani Machi, a delectable dish featuring Banana Leaf Steamed Seabass, accompanied by Muli Nu Raita and Salli. This dish is a rich and harmonious blend of flavors.

We were treated to an unexpected delight when we were served Dinjipuli Pork Ribs (not included in the tasting menu but available on the à la carte menu) – Sloanes Baby Back Ribs infused with Tamarind, Ginger, and Jaggery. It was undeniably finger-licking good.

The Mains!

We reached the main course, and it was a smorgasbord of mains. We started with a warm cup of Kodi Sherva, an Andhra-style chicken broth that was comforting and flavorful. Then, we enjoyed Coorgi Pandi Curry, a rich and spicy pork dish, accompanied by tender pork belly. Alongside, we had Gotu Kola Kosambari, a refreshing and crunchy salad.

Next up was Kundapura ghee roast chicken, seasoned with aromatic Kundapur masala and served with a crispy cone dosa, adding a delightful crunch. To finish, we had Pathiri Alleppey Fish Curry, which was smooth and flavorful, leaving us satisfied.

The Sweets!

To end the meal, we had two desserts and petit fours. The first dessert was Tender Coconut Payasam 2.0 with Jaggery Sesame Snap, Mango Jelly, and Sea Salt Ice Cream. This dish provided a refreshing balance to the meal’s flavors. The second dessert was Parsi Mawa Cake with custard, Berry Coulis, and Caramelized Milk Ice Cream. Additionally, we were served petit fours, reminiscent of the famous “And finally, monsieur, a wafer-thin mint.”

The Beverages

The wine pairing for this feast was excellent, with selections that perfectly complemented the entire tasting menu. Additionally, their cocktail selection is great; the mixologists really know how to shake it! One favorite is Rabta, which is pictured below—it’s the pink one.

The Crib!
